AS9100 vs ISO 9001: The 7 Gaps That Cause Major NCs
Already ISO 9001 certified? These are the aerospace additions that AS9100D layers on top of ISO 9001 — and the exact places where most suppliers pick up their major nonconformities.
AS9100D vs ISO 9001 — Where the Findings Come From
ISO 9001:2015 gives you the management-system foundation, but aerospace and defense OEMs need more assurance than a general quality standard provides. AS9100D keeps all of ISO 9001 and adds roughly 100 aerospace-specific requirements. The seven below are the ones that most often surface as major nonconformities when an ISO-only supplier moves to AS9100.
| Requirement | ISO 9001 | AS9100D | Typical Finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Risk (8.1.1) | Process risk | Operational risk + special requirements | Major if only on paper |
| Configuration Management (8.1.2) | — | Required | Major |
| Product Safety (8.1.3) | — | Required | Major |
| Counterfeit Parts (8.1.4) | — | Required | Major |
| Human Factors | — | Nonconformity + corrective action | Minor / Major |
| AS9102 FAI | — | Required | Major |
| OASIS | Not applicable | Mandatory | Certification blocked |
ISO 9001 is the foundation; AS9100D adds configuration management, product safety, counterfeit parts prevention, human factors, First Article Inspection (AS9102) and OASIS reporting. Each row above is a place an auditor can raise a major nonconformity if it exists only on paper.
If you are already ISO 9001 certified, treat AS9100 as an upgrade, not a rebuild. The fastest route is an AS9100 gap analysis that scores exactly which of these seven apply to you, followed by the AS9100D implementation roadmap to close them before the certification audit.
